Behavior Intervention Strategies
Prompting- Giving a small verbal, visual, or physical cue to a child before or during an action or response in order to assist them at any given situation, event or learning process to increase the likelihood that children will make correct responses.”
For example:
2. Teacher asks learner, “Clap your hands.”
Teacher prompts learner by holding each of the learner’s hands in his and then moving the learners hands through the entire action of hand-clapping.
3. Teacher asks learner, “What comes after Thursday?”
Teacher prompts learner by stating “Fr”
4. Teacher asks learner, “Clap your hands.”
Teacher prompts learner by playing a video of a person clapping his hands.

Priming- Giving an Advanced warning or notice when things are about to change
For Example, “In five minutes we are going to stop coloring and start math. Do you understand?”
“In 2 minutes we are going to stop coloring and start math. Please finish up.”
“In 1 minute we are going to stop coloring and finish math. Finish coloring.”
You can also offer a star or small prize like a Goldfish to stop. Consistent use of star or reinforcers is key. Priming will be used all day to get her to more easily transition from activity to activity.
Video Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oRPSifO_ic0&feature=emb_logo
Priming can also be used when you know there will be a CHANGE in the daily routine. You may want to be telling the child the day before or days before what is coming up so they are aware of the upcoming change. Showing a Visual Schedule that tells them when the change will happen, but also using Priming to let them know as it gets closer.
Video Example: https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=212&v=Mm1E84Vmy5w&feature=emb_logo
Choices- Giving students a controlled set of choices you can live with
Whenever possible, it is good to give the student a choice in order to let them feel in control of the situation.
For Example: “Would you like to do math with a RED pencil or a Yellow pencil?”
“Would you like to start on the top of the page or the bottom of the page?”
“Would you like to do math sitting in the chair or standing up?”
Make sure the choices you offer are things that you can live with.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0XNnE4ORmAc
Chunk Work-Breaking a Task into smaller pieces, or more manageable steps
Instead of presenting a whole page of work at a time, present only one row or one column of work so that the child does not get overwhelmed.

Consistency Within the Environment- Maintaining a routine/schedule
Set up a schedule and maintain the routine daily.
Create a visual schedule using words and/or pictures for younger students to assist her with her day.

Expectations Defined-state or write rules in a clear concise manner
Give the student a short direct list of rules and expectations. Instead of saying a negative statement about what you don’t want them to do, state what you do want them to do. This is helpful to be done both in written rules and verbal rules.
For Example, Do not say “Don’t run!” say instead, “Please walk.”
Instead of saying “Don’t scream” say “Please use your inside voice.”

Increase Reinforcement for More Challenging Times of Day-provide additional stimuli for harder activities
When a student has a hard time in a particular subject, reduce the amount of work (use chunking) and allow them a short break between tasking. Another good method is to try giving them a sticker after each problem or after reading each sentence or each paragraph, then after 5 stickers they can get a reward such as a 5 minute break (using a timer) or a treat like a single M&M or a single Goldfish. After their reward they must return and start over with a blank card to earn 5 more stars. It’s very similar to FIRST-THEN, but with a stronger reward at the end.

Non-contingent Attention-Engaging with the Student Regardless of the their BehaviorNon-contingent positive attention involves providing positive attention e.g. standing near the student, thumbs up, making a positive comment at regular intervals regardless of the student's performance. Providing a rich environment with positive attention can increase students' engagement and participation in learning. (On a timed schedule, provide positive feedback to a student continually no matter what!!)

Providing a rich environment with positive attention can increase students' engagement and participation in learning. (On a timed schedule, provide positive feedback to a student continually no matter what!!)
For example:
- Create a schedule for the frequency of non-contingent positive attention.
- Create a list of positive attention strategies that the student finds reinforcing. Varying the type of positive attention maintains the value of the attention.
- Identify the time intervals to deliver the positive attention, like every five minutes.
- Provide positive attention prior to the student engaging in any disruptive behaviours and continue to provide this attention according to the predetermined schedule.
- Once the undesirable behaviour occurs less frequently, gradually reduce the number of times per 30 mins the student receives positive attention.

Positive Reinforcement- immediate delivery of a stimuli that will increase the likelihood of the behavior
This can be a compliment (like Great work! Wonderful! Good job!) as soon as the student follows a direction, picks up her toy, sits down at her desk; Or giving a token, sticker, star on her chart when a student completes a given task.
The key items are to use what the student wants to get in exchange for what you want the student to do. The student must do and complete the task you give them before they get their reward!
